This clip features Charlie Rose and MoMA Chief Curator John Elderfield discussing the exhibition Matisse Picasso (MoMA, 2003), and their differences in both temperament, skill, and career.

Presented in 2003 through a collaboration between The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, the Musée Picasso, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the exhibition explored the nearly fifty-year dialogue between Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Since their first meeting in 1906, each artist recognized the other as his greatest rival. Their friendship, competition, and mutual admiration pushed both men toward new artistic breakthroughs and helped define the course of twentieth-century painting.

Planned over the course of 6 years, Matisse Picasso brought together masterpieces from major public and private collections around the world, many of which rarely travel and had never been exhibited side by side. By placing their works in direct conversation, the exhibition revealed how closely the two artists observed one another and how their lifelong exchange shaped some of the most important developments in modern art.
