Gertrude Hermes (更多樣的圖片連接 1901-1983) was a female British wood engraver, print maker and sculptor^[1]. She was born in Bickley, Kent^[2]. Her vision was austere, of what has been called "benign severity". She was teacher of wood engraving at the Royal Academy Schools until 1976. Her work is in many public collections including the Tate and National portrait gallery.

Gertrude Hermes (1901 - 1983)

Although best known for her engraving, Gertrude Hermes was also an accomplished sculptor and illustrator. Hermes was born in Bromley, Kent. In the early 1920s, she studied at the Leon Underwood School of Painting and Sculpture in London, with Henry Moore (1898-1986) among her contemporaries.

Hermes received many commissions for sculpture and black-and-white illustrations from private presses to Penguin books. During WWII in America and Canada, she undertook war work as a draughtswomen. After the war, she started working in colour and taught at many leading London art schools. The Royal Academy held a retrospective of her work in 1981 and she was awarded an OBE the following year.

The influences on her work included Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915),Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), tribal art and the forms of the natural world. Her engravings combine delicacy with complexity and a strong sense of vitality.
