Master of Contemporary Poetry - Robert Gray

The Australian Robert Gray was born in 1945 and grew up on the coast of New South Wales. At a young age he was incorrectly diagnosed with a threatening heart condition, and subsequently stopped going to school. Initially he worked as a journalist and began writing poems, later moving to Sydney, where he worked as a copywriter, a buyer for bookshops, a teacher for creative writing and reviewer of new publications for the radio broadcaster ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald. Following his poetic début with ?Introspect, Retrospect? in 1970 many major works were to follow. Grants and teaching posts at various universities in Australia and in Japan both encouraged and enabled him to complete more poetry. Today Robert Gray is one of Australia's most significant poets and is particularly highly-regarded for his landscape poetry, where his use of precise images, capture life's never-ending changes, rhythmic independence and moods. 	I awake to rain blown against this one room, beneath the cliffs of forest, on a slope above the valley that has welled with night. His books have just begun to be published overseas.
