Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English filmmaker. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema.[1] In a career spanning six decades, he directed over 50 feature films,[a] many of which are still widely watched and studied today. Known as the "Master of Suspense", Hitchcock became as well known as any of his actors thanks to his many interviews, his cameo appearances in most of his films, and his hosting and producing the television anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955–65). His films garnered 46 Academy Award nominations, including six wins, although he never won the award for Best Director, despite five nominations.

Hitchcock initially trained as a technical clerk and copywriter before entering the film industry in 1919 as a title card designer. His directorial debut was the British–German silent film The Pleasure Garden (1925). His first successful film, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927), helped to shape the thriller genre, and Blackmail (1929) was the first British "talkie".[4] His thrillers The 39 Steps (1935) and The Lady Vanishes (1938) are ranked among the greatest British films of the 20th century. By 1939, he had earned international recognition, and producer David O. Selznick persuaded him to move to Hollywood. A string of successful films followed, including Rebecca (1940), Foreign Correspondent (1940), Suspicion (1941), Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Notorious (1946). Rebecca won the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Hitchcock nominated as Best Director.[5] He also received Oscar nominations for Lifeboat (1944), Spellbound (1945), Rear Window (1954) and Psycho (1960).[6]

【明報專訊】法國作曲家Maurice Jarre周日因為癌症病逝於美國洛杉磯，享年84歲。Jarre曾9度獲提名奧斯卡最佳配樂，憑《沙漠梟雄》、《齊瓦哥醫生》及《印度之路》3奪金像獎，畢生影視配樂作品超過150部，其他著名的電影音樂還包括《人鬼情未了》、《霧鎖危情》及《滅口大追殺》等。Jarre獲獎無數，除了金像獎外，亦曾得過兩項有英國奧斯卡之稱的BAFTA、4個金球獎及1項格林美，並與維斯康堤（Luchino Visconti）、希治閣（Alfred Hitchcock）和大衛連（David Lean）等電影大師合作過。Maurice Jarre在1960年代移居美國，曾結婚4次，著名電子音樂先驅Jean-Michel Jarre正是他的兒子。他最後亮相公開場合是今年2月在柏林影展領取終身成就獎，影展主席Dieter Kosslick讚賞他：「電影音樂人通常活在演員和導演陰影下，但Maurice Jarre不同，就像《齊瓦哥醫生》等音樂，世界知名，而且將在影史上永誌不忘。」

【4月1日 AFP】映画『ドクトル・ジバゴ（Doctor Zhivago）』『アラビアのロレンス（Lawrence of Arabia）』『インドへの道（A Passage to India）』でアカデミー賞作曲賞を3度受賞したフランス人音楽家モーリス・ジャール（Maurice Jarre）氏が30日、米ロサンゼルス（Los Angeles）でガンのため死去した。84歳だった。息子でテクノ・ミュージックの先駆者として知られるジャン・ミシェル・ジャール（Jean-Michel Jarre）がAFPに伝えた。　故ジャール氏は1952年、フランス人監督ジョルジュ・フランジュ（Georges Franju）の依頼で短編映画『Hotel des Invalides』の作曲を担当し、デビューを飾った。　1960年代半ばに米国へ移住し、交響曲、舞台やバレエの音楽も手掛けた。　映画界ではジョン・フランケンハイマー（John Frankenheimer）、アルフレッド・ヒッチコック（Alfred Hitchcock）、ジョン・ヒューストン（John Huston）、ルキノ・ヴィスコンティ（Luchino Visconti）をはじめとする巨匠らとタッグを組み、150以上の作品の作曲を手掛けた。(c)AFP
