Just announced! Kenji Mizoguchi's THE LIFE OF OHARU (1952).

Set in feudal Japan, THE LIFE OF OHARU is Mizoguchi’s harsh indictment of exploitative men and a system that victimizes women. Kinuyo Tanaka demonstrates extraordinary tour-de-force acting in her role as a woman at various stages of her life who is continuously affected by men around her. A testimony to the supreme craftsmanship of Japanese filmmaking, the film is based on Saikaku Ihara’s novel "Koshoku Ichidai Onna." Donald Richie wrote that the film takes “a more serious view of the decline and fall of the heroine—from court lady to common whore. Yoshikata Yoda’s script, Tanaka’s performance as Oharu, Hiroshi Mizutani’s art direction and Ichiro Saito’s score—using Japanese instruments—help make this one of Mizoguchi’s most elegantly beautiful films.”

A handsome, if slightly worn, portrait of Oboshi Yuranosuke Yoshio (Asano Naganori), leader of the 47 rōnin - from my personal collection of Japanese art - from an illustrated book (ehon) of the "Chūshingura" (忠臣蔵), or "The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers", 1847 - 1848, by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳 1791 - 1861).

Chūshingura (忠臣蔵) is the title given to fictionalised accounts in Japanese literature, theatre, and film that relate to the historical incident involving the forty-seven rōnin and their mission to avenge the death of their master, Asano Naganori.

Including the early Kanadehon Chūshingura (仮名手本忠臣蔵), where, to avoid shogunate censorship, the authors set events in the earlier Muromachi period (1333–1568) and the names of the characters were altered, the story has been told in kabuki, bunraku, stage plays, films, novels, television shows and other media.

With ten different television productions in the years 1997–2007 alone, Chūshingura ranks among the most familiar of all historical stories in Japan.

The earliest known account of the Akō incident in the West was published in Isaac Titsingh's posthumous book, "Illustrations of Japan", in 1822.
