- Agamemnon: Tells of his treacherous murder by his wife Clytemnestra upon returning home.

- Ajax (Son of Telamon): Refuses to speak to Odysseus, still bitter over losing the contest for the armor of Achilles.
- The Sufferers: Odysseus witnesses eternal punishments meted out to mythological sinners, including Tantalus standing in water he cannot drink and Sisyphus endlessly pushing his boulder uphill.
- Heracles: Odysseus catches a glimpse of the hero's phantom while his true divine self feasts with the gods.
- Flight: As thousands of dead souls swarm around him in a terrifying uproar, Odysseus panics, flees back to his ship, and rows quickly out of the river

- Length of Service: Taught at Cambridge for nearly 40 years starting in 1984.
- Final Title: Professor of Classics at Cambridge and Fellow of Newnham College.
- Retirement Legacy: Funded an £80,000 student bursary known as the Joyce Reynolds Award to support under-represented Classics undergraduates.
