The Poet Amanda Gorman Says America Can Be the ‘Light’ It Needs
Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration.
Mr. President, Dr. Biden, Madam Vice President, Mr. Emhoff, Americans and the world. When day comes, we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade the loss? The loss we carry asea we must wade. We’ve braved the belly of the beast. We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace. In the norms and notions of what just is, isn’t always justice. And yet the dawn is hours before we knew it. Somehow we do it. Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time, where a skinny black girl, descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president, only to find herself reciting for one. And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine. But that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge our union with purpose, to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man. And so we lift our gaze, not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none, and harmony for all. Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped, that even as we tired. we tried, that will forever be tied together victorious. Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division. Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid. If we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade. But in all the bridges we’ve made. That is the promise promise to glade, the hill we climb. If only we dare it. Because being American is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we step into, and how we repair it. We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it. Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith, we trust. For while we have our eyes on the future, our history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared it at its inception. We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour. But within it, we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves. So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be, a country that is bruised but whole. Benevolent but bold, fierce and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation. Our blunders become their burdens. But one thing is certain. If we merge mercy with might, and might with rights, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright. So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with. Every breath, my bronze-pounded chest. We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the gold-limned hills of the West. We will rise from the windswept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South. We will rebuild, reconcile and recover in every known nook of our nation, in every corner called our country. Our people, diverse and beautiful, will emerge battered and beautiful. When day comes, we step out of the shade of flame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there was always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.

Two weeks ago, the poet Amanda Gorman was struggling to finish a new work titled “The Hill We Climb.” She was feeling exhausted, and she worried she wasn’t up to the monumental task she faced: composing a poem about national unity to recite at President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s inauguration.
“I had this huge thing, probably one of the most important things I’ll ever do in my career,” she said in an interview. “It was like, if I try to climb this mountain all at once, I’m just going to pass out.”
Gorman managed to write a few lines a day and was about halfway through the poem on Jan. 6, when pro-Trump rioters stormed into the halls of Congress, some bearing weapons and Confederate flags. She stayed awake late into the night and finished the poem, adding verses about the apocalyptic scene that unfolded at the Capitol that day:
We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it,
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed,
It can never be permanently defeated.
DW Culture Amanda Gorman has become the youngest poet ever to perform at a presidential inauguration. The 22-year old called for "unity and togetherness" in her self-penned poem "The Hill We Climb" which she recited to dignitaries in Washington and a world wide audience of billions watching the live-streamed event.

傅聰的家國情懷 (金鐘1992年香港專訪)
【金鐘按:傅聰先生12月28日感染武漢肺炎逝世。1958年他在華沙鋼琴賽獲獎後流亡英國,父親傅雷(翻譯家)則被打成右派份子,文革中自殺而死。傅雷父子的故事成為一個時代的劇本。1992年傅聰被邀擔任莫扎特鋼琴大賽評委來香港,曾接受我作為開放雜誌主編的錄音專訪,當時北京六四事件發生不久,蘇聯剛剛瓦解。迄今28年,這是最能表達他數十年家國情懷和獨立知識分子良知的一篇訪問。特此轉發,以紀念這位享譽東西方的音樂家。】
問:以中共統治四十年的流亡族群而言,您是先行者了。1958年,您「叛逃」的消息在「參考消息」上登出,我還記得。
傅聰:那是1958年底。怎麼登的?(笑)
問:說您同一位波蘭女鋼琴家私奔吧。
傅聰:沒有,完全沒有這回事。也許他們以為這樣登可以沖淡政治原因吧。
問:是因為反右運動嗎?
傅聰:當然。我完全沒有辦法,回去就是絕路一條,我已無路可走。
【中共是世界上最可怕的幫會】
問:您那時就那樣敏感嗎?好多人進了監獄還不知道怎麼進的啊。
傅聰:我很清楚。老實說,我們最初歡迎新中國的熱忱,今天難以想像。但我記得,解放軍才剛來不久,就開始講「思想改造」,我就覺得不對。那時我在昆明。1951年十七歲回到上海。思想怎麼能裝在一個框子裏嘛。我很反感。
我們對共產黨的希望,很快就變成失望。蔣介石同幫會有關係,青紅幫橫行。但共產黨來了後,證明他們是全世界最大的幫會、最可怕的黑幫,它那套秘密的無孔不入的幫規,超過全世界任何一個幫會。絕啦。今天的報上登西安有一個「戈巴喬夫學習小組」,結果好幾個人判刑十年,說是反革命,什麼罪?思想罪!虛弱到這個地步!
問:值得慶倖的是,克里姆林宮的紅旗,今天終於正式下來了。現在好多人擔心如果中國大變,會天下大亂,您看呢?
【紅衛兵文化流毒,中國道德已完全敗壞】
傅聰:中國從1979年鄧小平上台後,基本上是「掛羊頭賣狗肉」,掛社會主義的頭,賣資本主義的肉。如果不是當時的黨內鬥爭,可能鄧小平想有一天羊頭會自己變成狗頭。現在,他又被迫把羊頭掛得更明顯,但還是要賣狗肉。不過,經濟這樣發展下去,狗頭遲早還是得掛出來。所以,長期來看,我不悲觀。但是這幾年以我所看到的中國人的心態及它反映的中國文化而言,已經爛了,走到了絕路。毛澤東時代是東方暴君主義和斯大林主義混合的怪胎,將來的中國則是毛澤東紅衛兵的無法無天主義與資本主義最腐敗成份混合的怪胎。這樣的資本主義中國,我不敢樂觀。
問:很多人看到紅衛兵的習氣至今還存在。
傅聰:這些年,那些紅衛兵來到國外,翻雲覆雨,沒有一點點做人的基本道德,他們被毛澤東幾十年的薰陶,已經不知道謊言和真話的分別。他們不是故意扯謊,而是說謊已成為天性,上面騙下面,下面騙上面,這種心態從林彪垮台時就開始了。你別小看紅衛兵那一套,在資本主義社會也會很成功,很厲害,很不得了!將來中國人的邪聰明,會發展到絕頂的地步,玩手段,八仙過海,別人不是對手。中國傳統中的「計」字,是中國文化中很特殊的東西,各種文字無法翻譯的。這個「計」字太恐怖了,毛幾年亂搞一次,下面的人只有以「計」來應付。沒有別的東西比它更馬基雅維利(注:意大利政治家,著「帝王術」倡專制主義),它不講道德,沒有準則。毛澤東就是計之大家。這是一種很可怕的聰明。有如道家的絕境,道可道,非常道。玄啦,但在生活中可不能這樣出神入化,那太恐怖了。這樣的思想方式,加上資本主義,實在不值得樂觀。
【毛澤東以暴易暴,中國越分裂越好】
問:蘇聯最近這麼大的變化,「亡黨亡國」為什麼沒有亂、沒有文革?
傅聰:素質問題,當然也要歸咎統治者的愚民政策,老百姓愚昧才好統治,毛澤東統治就遺下了這麼多愚民。批評毛的人,往往也在用毛的方法。我當面批評過白樺的《苦戀》,我說他反對口號式的文學,但他的「苦戀」還是口號式的(笑)。文藝不是不可以有Messae(含意),列寧說過一些不了起的話,他說蕭邦是「藏在花朵裏的大炮」,文學可以有大炮,但要藏在花朵裏。《芙蓉鎮》就寫得好,只講過程,沒有口號,但人人看了,都覺得共產黨十惡不赦。
我小時候讀伯夷叔齊不食周粟的故事(注:見史記)「以暴易暴兮,不知其非矣」,周文王周武王滅了暴君王八蛋商紂王,伯夷叔齊為什麼還要說「以暴易暴兮」呢?我現在當然明白了,歷史總是勝利者寫的。當初毛澤東把蔣介石趕到台灣去,我們都很興奮,後來才知道這是以暴易暴,而且是更大的幾萬倍的暴、效率高到極點的暴,蔣介石的暴只是小兒科,他沒有效率(笑)。
問:現在不少人還是怕中國分裂,打內戰,統一壓倒一切……
傅聰:我看中國越分裂越好,中國太大了。這麼大的地方,永遠搞不好,秦始皇統一中國,是中華民族最大的罪人。中國如果不統一,春秋戰國那樣發展下來,就像歐洲一樣,文化會比現在輝煌得多。春秋戰國時,孔夫子周遊列國,講學,有用之人,這國不要,可以去遊說另一個國王,但梁漱溟、馬寅初什麼也不能說。所以,我看中國根本就不應該統一。中國文化最輝煌的時代,就是春秋戰國,哪怕大唐也不如它,可以和希臘並駕齊驅,百花齊放、百家爭鳴。小國有利於實行民主。大統一國家客觀上很難,為了管治,就必須高壓、要中央集權,只有小國,或聯邦才能分權,民主才好實行,歐洲就是這樣。
【對西方資本主義的未來也不看好】
問:您認為社會主義是否到此終止了?
傅聰:按馬克思主義說,社會主義是在資本主義高度發展後才出現的。現在,幾乎回到資本主義的一統天下,我看將來還是會搞社會主義的,因為這個世界上還有很多不公平的事,很多人生活得很慘,這需要作出平衡。人的欲望是無窮無盡的,有的人很greedy,貪婪哪,這是很可怕的。做學問可以「貪」,精神上的追求、占有,但物質上不能貪。
問:資本主義繁榮的動力不就是來自於人的貪念嗎?
傅聰:不錯,競爭致富是資本主義好的一面,但另一面是腐化的,要不得,不是人類的未來。商業統治全世界。你知道捷克作家昆德拉吧?他的書「不朽」,我非常喜歡,他說,現在統治世界的不是ideology(意識形態),而是imagology(形象主義),比如明星制度,一個人紅了,大家一窩蜂地去捧他,製造潮流,究竟他有什麼本事?誰也不知道。科吉牌牙膏我認為是最糟的牙膏,但全世界都用它,這就是形象主義統治一切。當然,意識形態由於人性的局限性,往往也會從理想變成謊言。共產主義就是如此,但它開始還是有理想的,可形象主義從開始起就沒有理想,就是謊言,騙你的廣告,這也很可怕。所以,我對人類的未來,無論東西方,都不看好。
問:那麼,藝術世界是否人類心靈的寄托呢?您在西方住了很久,認同感如何?
傅聰:個人可以有所寄托,但現實的藝術世界是經紀人、音樂團體、音樂學院……全都是烏煙瘴氣,充滿了謊言!充滿了皇帝的新衣!英國式民主,我覺得比美國式的好,似乎沒有更好的了,但它也有很多缺點,有很多可笑的地方,有時虛偽到極點。不過,沒辦法,人永遠找不到一個十全十美的制度,比較來說,英美民主還是不錯,有權力的制衡,人的基本權利、基本價值能得到保障。但這還遠不是人類社會的理想。總之,我對西方這種物慾橫流,沒有精神價值,覺得很可怕。
【不理解六四學生為什麼不撤離廣場?】
問:我看到西方人信教很虔誠,人也比較單純。您以為呢?
傅聰:是的,宗教給了西方人心中一個中心點,這是中國人缺乏的,中國人一天不想現實問題就活不下去。花半個月工資買一條名牌褲子,抽菸一定要抽健牌……人最重要的是要面對自己,西方人也講體面,但中國人做人特別辛苦,太講虛榮、裝飾門面。唉,我不僅不能在中國大陸生存,也不能在香港台灣生存,這個社會太複雜(笑)。劉曉波講得對,文革浩劫人人是受害者,誰是迫害者?
說到六四,當時我有很多話說,現在事過境遷,心情平靜了許多。但我永不會忘記。六四是個大悲劇,中國和中共都失去了一個轉折的契機。共產黨從反右起,就在自取滅亡,到文革已達瘋狂的高潮。六四以前,我常回去,看到人們已經沒有希望,年輕人一片世紀末的情調,四、五月的學運給了我最大的希望,但六四又給了我一個徹底的幻滅,所以,六四後,我就不回去。
問:有人說鄧小平不鎮壓,共產黨就要下台。
傅聰:不見得。那天和劉詩昆聊天,說如果是周恩來當權,他會去跟學生一道絕食,因為大家知道今天的爛攤子並不是鄧小平造成的。鄧如果聰明一點,因勢利導,成為學生和市民的民主理想的帶頭人,那結果真不得了,一百多萬人上街,誰擋得了呀!當然,六四那樣的結局,學生也犯了錯誤。百萬市民阻止軍隊進城,已經對政府投了不信任票,學生就應該撤出廣場,撤了,他的鎮壓就落空了,沒臉了。但嚴家其他們還去辦什麼民主大學,不是瞎過癮嗎?所以,中國知識份子也沒有政治智慧,我真不懂學生當時為什麼不撤?撤了很漂亮!局勢也不會像今天這樣,極左派上不了台,他們會輸得很慘。我懷疑「六四」就是極左派的陰謀和政變,為了推翻趙紫陽。
【毛澤東帝王術厲害,鄧小平只是實用主義】
問:不少人認為,中國的變,還要靠中共內部的力量,您同意嗎?
傅聰:最近聽說老百姓開始告官了,雖然這沒有用,但久而久之,一次又一次,每個人遇到官府欺負,都有種去告他,逼得人假戲真做,逐漸使人權法治開始生根,就有希望了。中國的事,靠群眾起來,草包當權,可能比共產黨還亂還壞,那不行。波蘭總理雅魯澤斯基就不主張反攻倒算,共產黨下台,但他們的文官制度還可以利用,官員們有經驗。管理一個國家不容易。我不贊成葉爾辛宣佈共產黨為非法,這是用共產黨的方法反對共產黨,是反民主的,這不對。他們可以宣傳共產主義,只是不讓他們壟斷、專政就行了。
毛鄧有好的地方,也有壞的地方。我三十年前剛到西方時,記者問我對毛的看法,我說他作為政治家我沒有資格評論,但作為一個喜歡詩的人,我認為他是一個大詩人,今天我還是這樣看。但今天我還是不清楚許多事情。毛雖有霸氣、流氓氣,假仁假義,但他的帝王藝術很強,鄧小平表現在魏京生這些問題上,氣度就太狹窄了,六四也處理得很窩囊,雖然,執政的效果是毛更壞。毛要改變人性,還有理想,雖然這理想也不一定對,但鄧小平純粹是個實用主義者,毫無理論。毛澤東是個人物。江青年輕漂亮跑去延安,自然會成功。但一旦和毛有了夫妻關係,就很微妙了,黨又限制她的權力,像在一班長輩的壓抑下,加強了她的叛逆性格,造成日後的復仇心理。毛澤東死的時候,實際上是很淒慘的,眾叛親離,他知道一切,死不回頭幹到底。毛一生從不滿足現狀,總要異想天開,他是個不凡的人,對這點,可以肯定。但效果一塌糊塗,詩人氣質搞政治的結果。所以,我今天談的東西,也未必有用。
