也是我最盼望有台灣出版社願意重新出版的書

（皇冠的版本已絕版多時）

2012年在哥本哈根旅行

深冬 冷得好想回家

我在書店讀著他剛出版的《Winter Journal》

再次被拯救

奧斯特也拍過電影和寫劇本

《煙》（Smoke）和《面有憂色》（Blue In The Face）陪我度過了布魯克林的獨居時光

《面有憂色》裡頭有誰客串呢？

很長一段時間

奧斯特都是我心中最酷的當代作家

他的文字深沉 有力量

善於營造出一種神祕的氛圍

讓讀者跟他鑽進地洞裡

一個極有深度的洞

我似乎每一本書裡都有提到他

包括《時空迴游》那個父子在冰河上相見的故事

《給所有明日的聚會》的序

我引用了他的這段話：

「我已經一躍而下，然後就在最後的關頭，有個東西伸出援手在半空抓住我。我將那個東西定義成愛。那是唯一能阻止一個人墜落的東西，那是唯一能推翻地心引力定律的東西。」

至今 我依然這麼相信著

我和他見過一面。

那是1996年的柏林影展，在洲際旅館(Hotel InterContinental)的早餐室，我當年住在慕尼黑，是為了楊德昌的電影「麻將」來到柏林，和當時的前夫吃完早餐正要離開。他很好認，看到他，居然發現他一直和我背對背。

對他的印象就是，哇法文怎麼這麼溜？眼神明亮，人很隨和。我上前說，奧斯特先生，我是您的讀者。他沒特別說什麼，或者是我忘了，我們握手道別。沒錯，他的「紐約三部曲」我真的仔細讀了一遍，想學習他的小說寫法，他也是雷蒙．卡佛之後我喜歡的美國當代作家。

我喜歡他的「紐約三部曲」，還有一個原因是我住過紐約，可以跟着他的腳步重溫當年的紐約生活，而且他的主人翁經常是那種處於孤獨和邊緣的作家。這對當時在寫作中的我也很容易引起共鳴。

今天聽聞他的死訊才知道，原來他這二年一直處在肺癌和化療的病情煎熬。

我是覺得，這幾年他過於煩惱了。他的愛子吸毒且因吸毒而誤殺自己的小女兒，從此官司不斷，然後接著又過度吸毒過世了。他非常愛他的兒子，當年還努力幫兒子在華人導演王穎的電影「煙」（Smoke）裏喬了一個竊書賊的角色，兒子和孫女的過世，讓他太傷心了。

時代他已走過，留下鉅作和電影。為他祈禱，希望他在那裡好好安息，少抽煙。

Paul Auster, the renowned American author who wrote "The New York Trilogy," "Leviathan," and "4 3 2 1," has died at the age of 77. He gained recognition for his postmodernist literature, which explored the concepts of coincidence, chance and destiny. Auster wrote over 30 books and also delved into film, writing the screenplay for "Smoke," which earned him the Independent Spirit award for best first screenplay ...⁸。

董成瑜。保羅·奧斯特曾是我非常喜歡的作家，他的每本書我都讀過，又特別喜歡他寫父親的《孤獨及其所創造的》。

讀者與作者的感情是很微妙的，至少對我這樣的讀者來說，有些書只會在某個人生階段特別喜歡，過了那個階段再讀，與其說會覺得少了點什麼，不如說我反而對那個時期的自己感到好奇：這本書為何令那時的我感到滿足？

當然有些書是另一回事，譬如《紅樓夢》和《金瓶梅》，就真的是每個時期讀都有不同的體會，都有從前不曾察覺的細節與感受。

2008年我去北京採訪王家衛，那天談了幾個小時，中間不知說到什麼，他問我喜歡什麼作家，我提到其中之一是保羅·奧斯特，他半開玩笑說，你們女生就是喜歡長得帥的作家。

那時的我當然是不同意的。不過現在看看保羅奧斯特的確是滿帥的。聽說他的第二任也是現任妻子挪威裔美國作家希莉·哈斯特維特（Siri Hustvedt）的作品很好，不過他今天去世的消息，是由他現任的女友發出來的。
