我上次去聖母院，是2013年，當時聖母院的外面搭了架子，慶祝聖母院850年紀念。我不用心算，就知道聖母院是在1163年奠基。以前念音樂史，念到「聖母院樂派」，看到這個年分就記住了。那是十字軍東征熱潮不歇的年代，這批法國人（特別是諾曼人）充滿衝動，根本坐不住。1066年度過海峽去打了英格蘭，1095年發起十字軍東征，長途跋涉，想要收復耶路撒冷。這種空間的水平擴延還不夠，還想往上垂直攀升。我想哥德式教堂是這種心理需求的產物，而巴黎聖母院是早期哥德式教堂的傑作。
在過去的數百年來，巴黎聖母院看盡了世態的美好與醜惡。
1572年，法國發生聖巴托羅梅歐屠殺。信奉天主教的王室策畫在聖巴托羅梅歐聖日，以鐘聲為號，屠殺前來參加婚禮的新教徒，死傷慘重。新郎亨利四世改信天主教，據說他曾說「巴黎還滿值得一場彌撒的」，意思是他改信天主教，就可以穩坐王位，不改信的話，可能死路一條。不過，亨利四世最後遇刺身亡，地點在巴黎。
十九世紀的畫家德拉克洛瓦的名畫「自由帶領人民」，巴黎聖母院的高塔就在背景中。貴族與教會都是法國大革命針對的對象。神職人員被追捕、行刑，沒被抓的，就逃走。教會的神聖性盡除。拿破崙加冕，不需要主教，教宗授其控制，他還頒佈新曆法，就是要抹去基督教的影響。可以想見，教堂－－包括巴黎聖母院在內－－不會有太好的待遇。巴黎聖母院成了龍蛇雜處之地，髒亂不堪，雨果看不下去，寫了小說《鐘樓怪人》。
儘管遭受許多考驗與破壞，巴黎聖母院仍然屹立，經過這次大火，整修之後重新開放。
對巴黎聖母院的認識越多，看到大門推開的那一幕的感觸越深。
