Born on April 22, 1904, in New York City, J. Robert Oppenheimer emerged as one of the most pivotal American theoretical physicists of the 20th century. A precocious student, he graduated from Harvard in 1925 and completed his Ph.D. in Germany at the University of Göttingen by 1927, where he studied under Max Born and interacted with future Nobel laureates like Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr. Oppenheimer returned to the United States, becoming a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he gained acclaim for his work in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, earning him respect as a profound intellectual force. By the late 1930s, his interest in ethical philosophy and Eastern texts—particularly the Bhagavad Gita—foreshadowed the moral complexities he would later face.
Circa 1942, as World War II escalated, Oppenheimer was appointed scientific director of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. government's top-secret effort to develop an atomic bomb. Working out of the remote Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, he assembled an elite team of scientists including Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, and Edward Teller. On July 16, 1945, the Trinity Test in the Jornada del Muerto desert successfully detonated the world’s first nuclear device—an event Oppenheimer famously reflected upon with the Sanskrit verse: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” That same year, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki altered global geopolitics and ushered in the nuclear age, positioning Oppenheimer at the crossroads of innovation and devastation.
After the war, Oppenheimer became a vocal advocate for international arms control, chairing the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission. However, by 1954, amid Cold War paranoia, he was stripped of his security clearance during a highly publicized hearing that tarnished his reputation. Despite this, he continued to write and lecture until his death on February 18, 1967, in Princeton, New Jersey. Oppenheimer remains a complex symbol of scientific genius shadowed by the ethical weight of his contributions, embodying the dual edge of modern progress.

The payout — said to be a combination of salary, profit participation and bonuses for the awards and the box office performance — is eye-popping but not out of line with other jackpots for talent involved in hugely successful films

So Nolan’s payday might be seen simply as a return on investment for Universal, his grateful studio. But it also rewards an audacious artistic gamble — a welcome confirmation of the value of artistic boldness and near-foolhardy creative risk.

OPINION

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Payday Rewards His Artistic Boldness

It’s not surprising that, in a remunerative sense, he’s treated like a star.
