dw 談Thomas Mann 及"The Magic Mountain" (originally titled "Der Zauberberg")等
“There are so many different kinds of stupidity, and cleverness is one of the worst.”― Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain
"The Magic Mountain, published in 1924, is not a historical novel but a novel about history—about a time just past whose ramifications have yet to fully unfold. Mann chillingly foresaw the disintegrating faith in reason and the corresponding surrender to the irrational that only a few years later produced Adolf Hitler and caused Mann’s own books to be burned in Germany."

“Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil.”

― Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain
In this dizzyingly rich novel of ideas, Mann uses a sanatorium in the SwissAlps, a community devoted exclusively to sickness, as a microcosm for Europe, which in the years before 1914 was already exhibiting the first symptoms of its own terminal irrationality. The Magic Mountain is a monumental work of erudition and irony, sexual tension and intellectual ferment, a book that pulses with life in the midst of death.
Chapter 13

The first English translation of Nobel Laureate Thomas Mann's THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN was published on this day in 1927. The novel was translated into English by H T Lowe-Porter, and was published with a new afterword by the author.
"Writing well was almost the same as thinking well, and thinking well was the next thing to acting well. All moral discipline, all moral perfection derived from the soul of literature, from the soul of human dignity, which was the moving spirit of both humanity and politics. Yes, they were all one, one and the same force, one and the same idea, and all of them could be comprehended in one single word... The word was — civilization!"
