Heisuke Hironaka, Groundbreaking Mathematician, Is Dead at 94
A recipient of his profession’s prestigious Fields Medal, he devised an algorithm that helps solve mathematical “singularities.” It now permeates the field.
開創性的數學家弘中平介逝世，享年94歲
弘中平介是數學界最高榮譽菲爾茲獎的得主，他發明了一種演算法，用於解決數學中的「奇點」。如今，這項演算法已廣泛應用於數學領域。

In 1980, the elder Dr. Hironaka started a summer seminar program for Japanese high school and college students. The summer seminars, now run by alumni, continue today.
In 1984, he founded the Japan Association for Mathematical Sciences to support the seminars and also an exchange program that allowed Japanese students and early career researchers to study in the United States. His aim was to offer students the kind of chances that he had been able to take advantage of years ago — that enabled a young man from rural postwar Japan to rise to the highest levels of mathematics.
From 1996 to 2002, Dr. Hironaka was the president of Yamaguchi University.
Dr. Hironaka spoke to students in Iwakuni, Japan, in 2024. He wrote popular books like “The Discovery of Learning,” which inspired many students to pursue math.Credit...The Asahi Shimbun, via Getty Images
