At first, Talankin makes quiet attempts at protest, like playing Lady Gaga’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the loudspeakers instead of the Russian national anthem. He gains a sense of purpose once he resolves to use his footage as material for a clandestine documentary on propaganda in the classroom, and connects with David Borenstein, an American documentary filmmaker in Denmark, who begins making the film we see today.
This focus on Talankin’s personal dissonance puts him at the center of a film that might have been better served by underscoring the indoctrination he chronicles. The documentary tries to heighten the stakes of Talankin’s story by casting his efforts under a pall of danger, dread or distress. But these bids for drama are far less persuasive than the horrifying raw footage Talankin captures, such as one scene in which young students are coached to march down a hallway, as if preparing for battle.
