ANA raises retirement age to 65 as Japan runs out of young workers
All Nippon Airways announced it will raise its mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 starting in 2027.
The move comes as Japan faces a dire labor shortage with fewer young people entering the workforce.
Employees who continue past 60 will now remain full-time workers instead of being downgraded to contract staff.
Pay will also improve, with workers receiving about 70% of their former salary, compared to the current 60%.
Highly specialized roles like pilots and mechanics could receive up to 90% of their previous pay.
This change is expected to cover about 1,500 employees over age 60, adding billions in labor costs.
ANA says the shift is meant to retain veteran expertise while passing skills to the shrinking pool of younger staff.
Japan’s aging society is pushing more companies to rethink retirement policies as demand for workers outpaces supply.
