Paul Bede Johnson CBE (2 November 1928 – 12 January 2023)[1] was an English journalist, popular historian, speechwriter, and author. Although associated with the political left in his early career, he became a popular conservative historian.

Johnson was educated at the Jesuit independent school Stonyhurst College, and at Magdalen College, Oxford. He first came to prominence in the 1950s as a journalist writing for and later editing the New Statesman magazine. A prolific writer, Johnson wrote more than 50 books and contributed to numerous magazines and newspapers.[2] His sons include the journalist Daniel Johnson, founder of Standpoint magazine, and the businessman Luke Johnson, former chairman of Channel 4.

Honours[edit]

In 2006, Johnson was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President George W. Bush.[38]

Johnson was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to literature.[39]

帕斯捷爾納克、普希金、雨果

 精神貴族

我讀帕斯捷爾納克自傳《人與事》,記憶最深的是這句話:「我可以像海涅一樣說:『作為詩人,我也許不值得被記住,但作為一個為自由而鬥爭的戰士,我將被人們銘記。』」
事實也是如此。今天他的詩名遠低於他為自由謳歌的小說家之名。他的《日瓦戈醫生》比他的詩流傳得更廣。這本只能偷送到蘇聯國外出版的小說,其寫作和出版的過程,本身就是一部傳奇。
如今看來,那本小說其實只是違背官方「社會主義現實主義」寫作規條,以一名自由知識分子立場描述了十月革命之後的俄國內戰,故事抒情,筆調溫婉。但在那個只允許《鋼鐵是怎樣煉成的》、《青年近衛軍》等紅色經典存在的時代,已屬離經叛道。
關鍵在於,帕斯捷爾納克從一開始就知道這是一部惹禍之作,但親歷了斯大林暴政,見證了好友阿赫瑪托娃、茨維塔耶娃、曼德爾施塔姆等天才詩人慘遭迫害,後兩位還死於非命,他認為自己對同時代人負有一筆巨債。
「寫這部小說是試圖償還債務。」他在回憶錄中說:「多年以來我只寫抒情詩和翻譯,現在我認為我有責任用小說講述我們的時代。」
小說果然引起軒然大波,因為在那個年代,社會主義陣營空前強大,知識份子左傾成為時髦,就連紀德那樣的法國文豪,說幾句蘇聯壞話也會引來一片謾罵。現在竟有這麼一位蘇聯詩人,敢於從鐵幕後面發出自己的聲音。立即引起轟動。小說被譯成二十種語言,并獲得第二年的諾貝爾文學獎。
這下蘇聯炸鍋了。帕斯捷爾納克被開除出作家協會,愛國賊們還舉着標語牌上街遊行,呼籲政府將他驅除出境,他們高呼着:「猶大,從蘇聯滾出去!」
身為一名年近七十的老人,帕斯捷爾納克不想背井離鄉過流亡生活,他只好拒絕領獎。但從此難以發表作品,幽居家中,靠養老金度日。在孤寂和痛苦中度過生命的最後兩年。
2018年我去莫斯科旅遊,本要去他的墓地憑弔。但當地朋友告訴我,那墓地很難找,而且連墓碑也沒有。據說,這是他的遺願:不入公墓,不要墓碑。他知道,他的靈魂將永遠活在他的作品中。

我想起了普希金。
普希金去世時也是遵照他的遺願葬在家院的一個角落。墓前的小小墓碑上,刻着他為自己寫的墓誌銘:
「這兒埋葬着普希金,/他和年輕的繆斯一起/度過了快樂的一生。/他沒作過甚麼善事,但在心靈上,/卻實實在在是個好人。」
他深信自己的詩已經為自己建立起了「一座非人工砌造的紀念碑」。
「不,我不會完全死亡。」在<紀念碑>一詩中,他寫道:「我的靈魂將在我遺留的詩句中/逃過腐朽,比我的骨灰活得更為長久。」

這跟雨果關於靈魂的一句話正是遙相呼應。當有人對雨果說「人死後靈魂也結束了」時,雨果高傲地回答:「你的靈魂也許是這樣;但我知道我的靈魂是永生的。」
因為雨果也跟普希金一樣,不畏強權,不媚俗眾,「在這殘酷的世紀,/我歌頌過自由,/并為犧牲者們祁禱過悲憫。」
誰說沒有精神貴族?這就是。
