Tintoretto was initially criticised by his contemporaries for working too quickly, which they said gave his paintings an unfinished look. 園翁說那陣子他查牛津版英國文學大辭典「喬治．艾略特」條，大辭典說艾略特無韻詩劇《西班牙吉卜賽》是早年遊意大利受了丁托列托 Tintoretto作品啟迪， Tintoretto一字加星號，說明《大辭典》中收了「丁托列托」條，可是他翻遍「Ｔ」字部找不到那一條，顯然遺漏了：「可見編辭典工程大，疏漏難免！」我好奇，掛了電話翻查那部《大辭典》只找到提香找不到丁托列托。丁托列托是十六世紀文藝復興後期威尼斯大畫家，原名雅各布．羅布斯提，父親做印染生意，得丁托列托綽號，意大利文「小染匠」之意，師事提香學畫，壁畫技術高妙，精通風格主義，藏在慕尼黑那幅《瓦爾剛撞見維納斯與瑪爾斯》聽說保存得最完整。他的《基督與淫婦》我在威尼斯一家畫廊看到縮小仿製品，老闆說是十七世紀畫家仿的。還有《銅蛇的勃起》，威尼斯琉璃坊仿製那條蟒蛇當擺飾。
