In videos posted to YouTube, he has spoken of the “self-fascistization” of his native country. As Russia embraces a militaristic ideology, he has said, the torturing of those who do not adhere to the Kremlin’s worldview has become “a declaration of love for the motherland,” while the act of dying as a soldier has become “more important than life.” He has demanded the release of political prisoners and compared the conditions in which they are being held to those of the gulag.
