　　安瑟‧亞當斯(Ansel Adams， 1902-1984)，一九○二年二月二十日生於舊金山，原籍新英格蘭。幼時是「過動兒」，求學過程頗不順利安定，主要靠家教、自學。十三歲開始認真學習鋼琴。一九一六年，與父母同遊優勝美地，用柯達的布朗尼箱形相機拍出第一張照片。返舊金山後旋即隨一位放大沖洗相片的師父學攝影技術。此後，每年夏天回優勝美地拍照、探險，成為熱愛山林、自然的環境保護者。一九二○年，決定以音樂為業；連續四年任西岳山社(Sierra Club)總部華康德紀念基金會(LeConte Memorial)的監管人。一九二七年，在藝術贊助人愛伯特‧班德(Albert Bender)的支持下，出版《西岳山脈之帕美利安相片》(Parmelian Prints of the High Sierra)。一九二八年，與維吉妮亞‧貝斯特(Virginia Best)結婚；同時出任山社加拿大洛磯山脈之旅的攝影師，奠定其在山社的領導地位。一九三○年，至新墨西哥州，遇攝影家保羅‧史川德(Paul Strand)，決心以攝影為職志。
