Prominent classical scholar and translator Emily Wilson published a scathing review of Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of The Odyssey in the London Review of Books, calling the self-penned screenplay "abysmal". Despite Nolan citing her 2017 translation as an influence, Wilson argued that the script lacked psychological depth, flattened Odysseus into a modern traumatized veteran, and used a gimmicky narrative structure. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Core Criticisms of the Script and Adaptation
  • Flattened Heroism: Critics and classicists argue that Nolan strips Odysseus of his core ancient Greek hubris, pride, and strategic cunning, replacing it with modern, somber PTSD. [1]
  • Literary and Dialogue Deficits: Emily Wilson remarked she "would be ashamed to have written any part of this script," asserting it offers nothing convincing about memory, war, or history. [1, 2]
  • The Publishing Paradox: While the film and its companion screenplay book release have spiked massive commercial interest—sending Homeric translations and audiobooks flying off shelves and boosting publishing sales—purists feel the adaptation sacrifices classical nuance for blockbuster spectacle. [1, 2]
Would you like to explore Emily Wilson’s specific textual analysis compared to Homer's original verses, or look into Christopher Nolan's defense of his narrative choices?

The recent release of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has turned just about every film critic in America into a classicist, and vice versa. But the question of how adaptation works has a strong connection to the root of cinematic modernity, Richard Brody writes. The history of cinema itself can be seen mostly as one of adaptation, he argues. He considers the art of the literary adaptation, and how translating stories from one form to another is at the heart of cinema—and its criticism: https://www.newyorker.com/....../what-makes-an..

Epic misunderstanding

There has been a lot of hoo-ha about Homer these past few weeks, prompted by Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the Odyssey, the Iliad that precedes it and the time in which the Homeric epics are set. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/4g3El65
