- Founding: Opened in 1919 by American expatriate Sylvia Beach at 8 rue Dupuytren (and later moved to 12 rue de l'Odéon) in Paris. [1, 2]
- Censorship Defiance: When D.H. Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover in 1928, it was widely banned for explicit content. [1]
- Distribution and Support: Shakespeare and Company stood apart as a beacon of literary freedom by helping distribute and sell unexpurgated copies of Lawrence's controversial work when mainstream avenues refused to touch it. [1]
- Top Borrower: Archival lending records from Beach's shop show that D.H. Lawrence was actually among the store's most active and frequent book borrowers. [1]
- The famous obscenity trials surrounding Ulysses or Lady Chatterley's Lover
- George Whitman's later reopening of the bookstore as "Le Mistral" in 1951

"The Ship of Death" by D.H. Lawrence
And the long journey towards oblivion…
Have you built your ship of death, O have you?
O build your ship of death, for you will need it. "

(Not I, But the Wind)

I am not there, I do not sleep
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am not there, I did not die
I am the swift rush of birds in flight
I am the stars that shine at night
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a thousand winds that blow

I am not there;I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in the circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there ;I did not die.
由於此首詩詞本身並無名字,因此,一般人就以其第一句「Do not stand at my grave and weep」來命名。
"The human soul needs actual beauty more than bread"
David Herbert Lawrence, English writer and poet, was born #onthisday1885.
Lawrence's best known novels include The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928, but banned until 1960). His depiction of sexuality shocked many readers, and obituaries presented adverse responses to his achievement. However, the novelist E.M. Forster was an exception, describing him as ‘the greatest imaginative nove⋯⋯ 更多

The tale that classic American literature tells, in the aggregate, is largely one of violence, conflict and cruelty, whether it unfolds on Cooper’s frontier, in Hawthorne’s Salem, in Poe’s fantastical mansions or on Melville’s South Seas. There is a remorseless clarity to Lawrence’s perception of this bloody tapestry, summed up in his description of Cooper’s Natty Bumppo:
But you have there the myth of the essential white America. All the other stuff, the love, the democracy, the floundering into lust, is a sort of by-play. The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic and a killer. It has never yet melted.
Nobody Ever Read American Literature Like This Guy Did
Inflamed, impertinent and deeply insightful, D.H. Lawrence’s “Studies in Classic American Literature” remains startlingly relevant 100 years after it was originally published.

Shakespeare and Company is probably the most famous bookshop in the world, enjoying a halo from its proximity to some of literature’s patron saints. Can its playbook be copied? bit.ly/46s3nr1
