Who is your favorite fictional hero or heroine?

There are many, but let’s start with the two protagonists of L.P. Hartley’s “Eustace and Hilda.” Then Gogol’s Chichikov, Dickens’s Mr. Pickwick and Cervantes’s Don Quixote of Part II.

How have your reading tastes changed over time?

It’s been a process of learning what they are. I look for the subjective pulse of the author, of the kind I feel in Hamsun, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Turgenev. In much contemporary literary fiction, that’s often replaced by ingenuity. I’d be a terrible postmodernist: I’m not interested in ingenuity.

https://theatln.tc/cj7MV8Gl

Thomas McGuane—a fisherman, hunter, rancher, and writer—may be the last of a dying breed of literary outdoorsmen. Tyler Austin Harper visited McGuane at his ranch in the remote town of McLeod, Montana, to examine what we stand to lose. https://theatln.tc/cj7MV8Gl
McGuane is the author of 10 novels, including “Ninety-two in the Shade,” which was a finalist for the National Book Award and was made into a movie starring Peter Fonda. The story of a tarpon guide in Key West, it was loosely inspired by the time McGuane spent there, when the city was an intermittent home to a circle of his fisherman-writer friends: Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, and Guy de la Valdène. In those years, McGuane wrote some of his most famous books and cemented his reputation as a gifted angler and author.
“Now at 85, McGuane is wiry and strong, a hard man who has—by his own choice—lived a physically arduous life as a working rancher,” Harper writes. “He describes himself as a ‘recluse,’ but he clearly doesn’t hole up on his property in remote McLeod. Everywhere I went … I ran into someone who knew him and conveyed what I was discovering: how generous, funny, and kind he is.”
The author seemed to harbor no special fixation on his cultural legacy, Harper notes. When asked what he thinks of Taylor Sheridan’s Montana-ranch soap opera, “Yellowstone,” a TV series quite obviously influenced by McGuane’s Western fiction, he told Harper that he hadn’t seen it.
Harper writes that he’s “struck by how rare men like McGuane are becoming.” But when he asked McGuane if he lamented the disappearance of outdoorsmen from American literary culture, the author’s response was succinct: “No, and good riddance!”
“But perhaps—and this seemed to me more likely—this modesty is also something of a defense mechanism,” Harper writes, “a way of coping with a transformed culture that is not much interested in the knife-thin silhouette of permit on a shallow flat, the smell of sagebrush in the Montana backcountry, the way a pheasant folds and falls when it’s been hit cleanly with shot, or simply a red fox that has survived another winter.”
