Kisho Kurokawa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
-Famed architect leaves a 'transparent' legacy
2008/11/15
YAMANOUCHI, Nagano Prefecture--In a moving tribute, the son of late architect Kisho Kurokawa has donated the "transparent" campaign truck his father used during unsuccessful runs for office.
Mikio Kurokawa donated the vehicle to the municipal government here.
The world-renowned architect ran for governor of Tokyo in April last year and for a seat in the Upper House in July before he died that October. Kurokawa designed the vehicle with large bubble windows on the sides and rear.
While campaigning for the Upper House, he was frequently seen calling for enhanced transparency in politics accompanied by his wife, actress Ayako Wakao, who also ran in the election.
The truck is on display at the Shiga Kogen Roman Museum in Yamanouchi through Dec. 14.
The town-operated museum was designed by Kurokawa, based on the concept of "coexistence with nature."
The vehicle comes with a hitch--it's not exactly eco-friendly. For every liter of gasoline, it can travel only about 2 kilometers.
Still, town officials say that the campaign truck is "a work of art that embodies the (museum's) ideal, so long as it remains stationary."
Kurokawa designed the National Art Center, Tokyo, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, as well as Japan's first "capsule" hotel.(IHT/Asahi: November 15,2008)
