Was Pearl S. Buck Chinese? Pearl S. Buck, the author of
The Good Earth, was born in West Virginia (on this date in 1892), but her missionary parents had lived in China for about a dozen years before her birth and returned to China three months thereafter. She lived in China for the first 40 or so years of her life, with the exception of sojourns in the United States to obtain bachelor's (from
Randolph-Macon Woman's College) and master's (
Cornell) degrees. Buck is credited with introducing Americans to Chinese peasant life; nevertheless, she was denounced during China's
Cultural Revolution as an "American cultural imperialist." The first American woman to win a Nobel in Literature, she was also a social activist and opened the first international interracial adoption agency and an orphanage.
Quote:
"Like Confucius of old, I am so absorbed in the wonder of the earth and the life upon it, that I cannot think of heaven and the angels." — Pearl S. Buck
