透過新書《布希》審視川普崛起

當人們拚命想要理解川普的崛起意味着什麼的時候,這本布希的新傳記值得討論。川普的名字雖未出現,但把他推向共和黨提名的這股民粹主義反叛根源正是在布希執政時期。
....關於布希的歷史地位,史密斯毫不含糊。全書的第一句話就是:「美國歷史上罕有像喬治·W·布希這樣糟糕的總統。」
最後一句是:「喬治·W·布希究竟是不是美國歷史上最糟的總統,人們還會爭論很久,但他入侵伊拉克的決定,無疑是歷任美國總統所作出的最糟糕的外交決定。」
在這一頭一尾之間,是一本650多頁敘事節奏明快、措辭嚴厲的傳記。在這部傳記中,布希的宗教信仰演變為救世主式的狂熱,讓他把宣揚民主視為來自上帝的使命。他不聽將軍們和外交官們的建議。他對卡特琳娜颶風的應對極為拙劣。他批准實施酷刑與竊聽,對美國價值觀的貶值負有責任。
