Canto degli Scali(階梯之歌)
Key Aspects of Florentine Canti:
- Historic Streets (Canti): Many Florentine street corners were historically referred to as "canti" rather than by street names. These intersections, such as the Canto degli Scali and Canto alla Briga, are considered ancestors of the modern street system.
- Carnival Songs (Canti Carnascialeschi): These were popular, often polyphonic, songs performed during Florentine carnival festivities, particularly in the 15th and 16th centuries.
- Context: The songs were heavily associated with the Medici court. They often included themes of the carnival, such as masquerades and celebrations.
- Musical Style: The music was often simple, designed for processionals, and sometimes featured a, 3-part structure, or even 4-part harmonies.
- Religious Influence: Savonarola’s influence led to a shift towards lauda (spiritual songs) rather than the more secular canti towards the end of the 15th century.

One of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries celebrates his centenary today. György Kurtág was born 19 February 1926, and studied as a composer and pianist. His works are characterised by their depth, curiosity and their fragmented, fundamental nature.
Soprano and Kurtág scholar Dr Rebecca Hardwick says "It’s a privilege to be alive at the same time as György Kurtág turns 100, and to be in anticipation of the premiere of his new opera. The way in which his writing is technically demanding but with a profound understanding of the singing voice, and what it is to be human, makes him one of the most exciting composers in history to study. He uniquely bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary practice."
