Who was Rosa Bonheur? Rosa Bonheur was a 19th-century artist who specialized in paintings and sculptures of animals. Born on
March 16, 1822, in
Bordeaux, France, she became the first female recipient of the
Grand Cross of the
French Legion of Honor. Emperor
Louis-Napoleon opposed the idea of women receiving the honor, so someone else presented it to her when he was out of town. Bonheur became known as much for her casual promoting of women's rights as for her art. At a time when women did not wear pants or smoke cigarettes, Bonheur did both. She needed and received police permission to wear pants as she traveled and worked within the city limits of Paris, where she spent much time in slaughterhouses, observing and dissecting animals to better understand their anatomy.
