Many Americans will pay tribute over the next few days to Muhammad Ali, the former boxing champion who died earlier today. In my youth, there was no sports figure who was more charismatic or politically controversial than Ali. He transcended the sports world, becoming an important figure in race relations, religious tolerance, and the peace movement. He hadn't been seen in public very much in recent years because of his declining health, so it is difficult to explain to younger generations why he was such an icon of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. It is hard to imagine an athlete capturing the world's attention the way Ali did. There are numerous excellent books and movies that chronicle his life, but my favorite would be the documentary film "When We Were Kings," the story of the famous heavyweight championship fight between Ali and George Foreman, known as the Rumble in the Jungle. I would recommend you check it out to see a fascinating slice of the 1970s. Ali's boast might have seemed vainglorious at the time, but he was probably right -- he was the greatest of all time...km

"He was butterfly and bee. In the ring, he floated and stung.
In 1967, Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, refused to put on a uniform.
'Got nothing against no Viet Cong,” he said. “Ain’t no Vietnamese ever called me nigger.'
They called him a traitor. They sentenced him to a five-year jail term, and barred him from boxing. They stripped him of his title as champion of the world.
The punishment became his trophy. By taking away his crown, they anointed him king.
Years later, a few college students asked him to recite something. And for them he improvised the shortest poem in world literature:
“Me, we.” - Eduardo Galeano

Ali called himself “The Greatest,” and many agreed. Among boxers, he certainly ranked among the elite, having won the heavyweight title three times in his 21-year career. But it was his life outside the ring that inspired the strongest adjectives. He was the prettiest, the brashest, the baddest, the fastest, the loudest, the rashest.

"He was willing to sacrifice his crown, money and stature for his principles."

“Boxing's greatest-ever fight” took place between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali on October 1st 1975. After 14 rounds in 100-degree heat, Frazier's trainer stopped the fight. Ali later said that “Frazier quit just before I did. I didn't think I could fight any more”

One of Sports’ Most Charismatic and Polarizing Figures

  • Ali was a three-time world heavyweight boxing champion who transcended sports and helped define his turbulent times.
    • He entertained with his mouth as much as his fists, narrating a life of brash self-confidence full of religious, political and social stances.

In Their Own Words
As a Muslim convert, who is afraid to come out to his family about it, Muhammad Ali means so much for me in terms of hope.
