Jean Vanier, CC, GOQ (September 10, 1928 – May 7, 2019) was a Canadian Catholicphilosopher, theologian, and humanitarian. In 1964, he founded L'Arche, an international federation of communities spread over 37 countries,[1] for people with developmental disabilities and those who assist them. Subsequently, in 1971, he co-founded Faith and Light with Marie-Hélène Mathieu, which also works for people with developmental disabilities, their families, and friends in over 80 countries. He continued to live as a member of the original L'Arche community in Trosly-Breuil, France, until his death.[2]
Over the years he wrote 30 books on religion, disability, normality, success, and tolerance.[3]Among the honours he received were the Companion of the Order of Canada (1986),[4]Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec (1992),[5] French Legion of Honour (2003), Community of Christ International Peace Award (2003), the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award (2013), and the Templeton Prize (2015).

「ラルシュ」は、フランス語で「箱舟」の意味から付けられた名前であり、「なかま(コア・メンバー)」と呼ばれる知的ハンディを持つ人々と彼らの生活を支える「アシスタント」と呼ばれる人々が、人間らしさを探そうとするコミュニティー(共同の生活の場)である。ラルシュではそれぞれの信仰が大切にされており、祈りを中心とした生活を送っている。現在、ラルシュの霊性に基づくグループ・ホームは世界各地に広がり、147のコミュニティーからなる。
「信仰と光」[編集]
「信仰と光」は、知的ハンディを持つ人々とその家族・友人が集う、地域ごとの小さなネットワークである。1971年ジャン・バニエとマリーエレン・マチューによってフランスで創設され、約78ヵ国に1,500の共同体が存在する。
メンバーは定期的に集まり、友人として互いの生活での経験を語り合い、喜びと困難を分かち合う。ラルシュと同じ考え方(霊性)に基づいているが、ラルシュと違ってなかまのメンバーは家族と暮らしている。
