Tina Turner’s influence on music is difficult to overstate. Dubbed the ‘Queen of Rock and Roll’, she was a performer whose blisteringly powerful vocals and high-octane performances influenced every diva since. Her trailblazing shows set the standard for the modern stadium diva experience and her talent and success kicked open doors for Black female performers that followed. Turner’s career truly shaped the contemporary musical landscape and her music, bravery, tenacity and style will continue to inspire for generations to come. - Photo by Gai Terrell/Redferns. On Wednesday, one of the great American voices—gritty, tender, and red-hot, containing, somehow, both the entire history and future of rock and roll—went silent. Tina Turner was known for her superhuman resilience, “and, in a way, I came to believe that she was actually invincible,” Amanda Petrusich writes. Turner found a way to tap into some deep wellspring of ease and abandon and self-love, and drew from it when she needed to. “And now she has left that for us,” Petrusich writes, “in her music, in her voice, in the singular way she occupied a stage.” Read her reflection on Turner’s untouchable legacy: http://nyer.cm/VPvDeMD

Tina Turner: The trauma and triumph of a music legend
Rising from humble beginnings, Turner overcame abuse and a career slump
Queen of rock ‘n’ roll Tina Turner has died after a long illness. She was 83.
Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, she began her recording career in 1957 after meeting Ike Turner, whom she married. For a long time, they seemed a prolific musical duo, with Tina bringing star power and a shimmering, big voice to his musical arrangements and the creative vision that he controlled. But behind the scenes, she was suffering horrific abuse at his hands, which she later revealed publicly after their separation and divorce.
Re-emerging as a solo artist, Tina Turner achieved an exponentially higher level of success, earning 12 Grammys, three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and performed for packed stadiums. Her life story has been retold as a Broadway musical and Hollywood film, as well as in a 2021 documentary.
In 2013, Turner married German music executive Erwin Bach and relinquished her U.S. citizenship after becoming a citizen of Switzerland. She died at home, her manager said.
