Louise Glück, a poet and Nobel laureate whose work delved extensively into trauma, disillusion, stasis and longing, has died.
In 2020, she became the first American poet since T.S. Elliot to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for what the judges called “her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.”
“The advantage of poetry over life is that poetry, if it is sharp enough, may last,” Glück, the author of 12 books, once wrote.
Other honors for Glück include the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for “The Wild Iris,” an exchange in part between a beleaguered gardener and a callous deity; the National Book Award in 2014 for “Faithful and Virtuous Night"; and a National Humanities Medal in 2015 for her “decades of powerful lyric poetry that defies all attempts to label it definitively.” She was also the 2003-2004 U.S. poet laureate.
