The Japanese government is providing
over $8 billion in subsidies to TSMC for two manufacturing facilities (fabs) in Kumamoto, Japan, to secure local production of high-end logic chips for autos and AI. A first fab opened in early 2024, with a second, more advanced fab set to begin operations by 2027.- Subsidies: The government announced in 2024 that it would grant roughly $4.86 billion (¥732 billion) to support the construction of a second factory. Combined with subsidies for the first plant, total public funding exceeds $8 billion.
- Factory Details (JASM): The project is operated under Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM), a joint venture with partners like Sony and Toyota.
- Impact: The two fabs will produce chips ranging from 6-7 nanometers to 3-nanometers, significantly boosting Japan’s domestic semiconductor supply chain.
- Future Plans: Reports as of late 2024 and early 2026 indicate TSMC is considering a third, potentially more advanced, plant in Japan to strengthen this partnership.
The initiative is part of Japan's broader strategy to revive its chip industry and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
