For all snowflakes' infinite structural variation, their journeys to Earth are remarkably similar—even predictable. Researchers tracking more than half a million falling flakes have uncovered a broad mathematical pattern that describes precisely how they swirl through the air.
University of Utah atmospheric scientist Tim Garrett, senior author of a new study in Physics of Fluids, has studied snowflakes for nearly a decade. Although the behavior of such tiny, ephemeral objects may seem inconsequential, their fall speed is a key variable in forecasts of weather and climate, even in the tropics; most precipitation, regardless of where it eventually ends up, begins as snow. http://spklr.io/6002Da4da

查看更多Elon Musk escalated his public feud with Anthropic after the Amazon-backed firm accused Chinese AI labs of copying its Claude model. Musk, who runs xAI, fired back by alleging Anthropic itself stole training data “at massive scale.”
Anthropic claimed Chinese firms including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax carried out “industrial-scale” distillation attacks. The company said these labs created more than 24,000 fake accounts and ran over 16 million interactions with Claude to extract its capabilities.
Distillation is a common AI technique, but Anthropic argued it becomes abusive when used to rapidly replicate advanced models at low cost. The company warned that such practices could weaken safety guardrails and raise national security risks, while strengthening the case for tighter U.S. chip export controls.
Musk responded on X by accusing Anthropic of hypocrisy, saying the company had already paid multibillion dollar settlements related to copyrighted training data. Anthropic did not immediately respond to Musk’s claims.
The clash comes as scrutiny around Anthropic grows. Last year, the company reportedly agreed to a $1.5 billion copyright settlement, and earlier this month closed a massive funding round that pushed its valuation sharply higher.
At the same time, the Pentagon appears to be widening its AI options. According to reports, the U.S. military has approved xAI’s Grok model for classified use, a role previously dominated by Anthropic’s Claude.
