International Booker Prize Goes to a Love Story Out of Taiwan “Taiwan Travelogue” 《台灣漫遊錄》獲國際布克獎:美食、愛情與殖民。

“pulls off an incredible double feat: It succeeds as both a romance and an incisive post-colonial novel.”

Shahnaz Habib, writing in The New York Times Book Review, said that “Taiwan Travelogue” was “a delightfully slippery novel about how power shapes relationships, and what travel reveals and conceals.” It was, Habib added, a “virtuosic performance of literary polyphony.”

“Literature has never ceded ground, nor given up on dialogue between people,” Yang said. “The century-old inquiries in Taiwan’s literature are in fact the century-old pursuit of freedom and equality by Taiwan’s people.”

post colonialism
Post-colonialism is an academic and critical theory framework that studies the cultural, political, and economic legacies of European colonialism. Originating in the late 20th century, it analyzes how imperial dominance shaped modern societies, and it seeks to reclaim the history and agency of formerly colonized peoples. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Core Concepts
  • Othering: The colonial practice of defining the colonized population as fundamentally different, exotic, or inherently inferior to justify imperial rule.
  • Hybridity: The blending of cultural, linguistic, and social elements from both the colonizer and the colonized. Theorists argue that colonized cultures are rarely erased completely, resulting in new, mixed identities.
  • Hegemony: The ways in which the colonizer maintains dominance not just through physical force, but by imposing their worldview, values, and language so that it becomes the accepted norm.
  • Subaltern: A term used to describe populations who are socially, politically, and geographically excluded from the established hierarchy of power, often lacking a voice to articulate their own experiences. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Figures and Texts
  • Edward Said (Orientalism, 1978): Arguably the foundational text of the field. Said argued that Western literature and academia created a romanticized, distorted view of the "East" (the Orient) to justify Western imperial control.
  • Frantz Fanon (The Wretched of the Earth, 1961): A psychiatrist and philosopher who analyzed the psychological damage of colonization and the necessity of violent resistance to achieve true decolonization.
  • Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (Can the Subaltern Speak?, 1988): Explores the difficulty of marginalized groups, especially women, in having their voices heard through the dominant discourses of the West.
  • Homi Bhabha: Known for concepts like "hybridity" and "mimicry," examining the ambiguous, shifting spaces of cultural interaction between colonizer and colonized. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Post-Colonial Literature
Literature is one of the primary mediums for post-colonial critique. Post-colonial literature includes works written by authors from formerly colonized countries that articulate their identities and reclaim their cultural histories. [1, 2]
  • Chinua Achebe (Things Fall Apart)
  • Salman Rushdie (Midnight's Children)
  • Jean Rhys (Wide Sargasso Sea) [1]
