From Taiwan, with love: single-malt whiskyCharles Passy
The back story: Who says Scotland has the single-malt whisky category all to itself? In recent years, the American market has seen whiskies from other countries — Japan, India, France — find their ways to store shelves. And now comes Taiwan — specifically, a brand called Kavalan that’s the brainchild of Taiwanese entrepreneur T.T. Lee, who made much of his fortune in canned coffee, which is hugely popular in Asia, As it turns out, Lee also has a taste for brown spirits — specifically, single-malt Scotches. So he decided to make his own right at home, enlisting the help of Jim Swan, a well-known distiller. (The barley that goes in the whisky still comes from Europe, however.)
Swan and Kavalan’s team found that Taiwan proved to be a particularly special place to make whisky. That’s mainly because the hotter temperatures (compared with Scotland) resulted in a quicker maturation time. Where single-malt Scotches typically take anywhere from 8 to 15 years to properly age in the casks and absorb all the flavor from the wood, Kavalan’s whiskies take all of three years (or less).
Many in the booze biz were skeptical of the effort, including David King, president of Anchor Distilling, the U.S. company that ended up becoming Kavalan’s American distributor. “I was the doubting Thomas,” King recalls of his initial reaction. But King says the proof (pardon the pun) is in the bottle. In just a few years since the company’s launch, its whiskies have won many awards and accolades, including 90-plus ratings from Whisky Advocate magazine (and World Whisky of the Year honors from the publication, too). Oh, and the stuff is selling well in America in the few months since Kavalan’s stateside debut, King notes: “When I’m getting decent repeat orders from Minnesota, that means something is happening.”
