BREAKING: Trump Just Blew Up His Own Trade Deal With Canada and Mexico
Donald Trump let the USMCA collapse this week, walking away from the very trade deal he spent years bragging about negotiating during his first term.
The U.S. Trade Representative confirmed Wednesday that the White House would not renew the agreement in its current form, effectively ending the 16 year old trilateral pact that has supported roughly $2 trillion a year in trade between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Trump once called the USMCA a historic win for American workers and farmers. Now he is the one tearing it apart, after months of piling tariffs onto Mexican and Canadian goods and insisting the U.S. doesn't need anything from either country.
"We don't need anything that Canada has. We don't need anything that Mexico has, but they need everything that we have," Trump told reporters in June. "And they have to treat us better."
Canada and Mexico are two of America's largest trading partners, together accounting for about a third of all U.S. exports. Farmers, ranchers, and small businesses across the country built their supply chains around a deal Trump himself signed, and now that deal is unraveling with no replacement in sight.
Economists say the uncertainty could drag on for months, leaving American workers to absorb the fallout of a fight Trump picked with his own trading partners.
