當然,雖沒說「世界首富」是誰,但大家都知道她指的是 Elon Musk,隨後她又接連發文評論對方的政治立場與家庭關係,甚至稱讚與父親疏遠的女兒 Vivian Wilson,並補上一句:「正常的父母會為她感到驕傲。」此舉也引來馬斯克罕見回應。
這看似是一場「87 歲小說家大戰世界首富」的口水戰,但實際上, Joyce Carol Oates 也想藉此向世人提問:什麼才是人真正擁有的事物?
儘管 Joyce Carol Oates 常被視爲女性作家或社會批判作家,但她始終認為自己更像觀察者,回顧自己走上寫作之路的數十年,她說:「我一直都是個作家,而且非常內向。」比起告訴讀者應該相信什麼,她更在意每個人如何經歷自己的人生,以及那些經常被忽略的情感(失落、孤獨、渴望、愛與悲傷)如何一步步塑造一個人。然而,與許多公開參與政治辯論的知識分子不同,Oates 始終拒絕將自己定位為社運運動家或意識形態的代言人。
