It looks like a playful moment at a piano. It’s the opposite. The woman is a mistress, and she has just realised what her life has become. Hunt filled the room with clues: rings on every finger except the one that matters, a cat catching a broken-winged bird beneath the table, a discarded glove that in Victorian code foretold a cast-off mistress’s fate, a tangle of yarn spilling across the floor, a clock sealed under glass. Even the sheet music is real — “Oft in the Stilly Night,” a song about lost innocence — and it’s what triggers her awakening. She looks past the man, toward the window, toward the light. This is the exact second her conscience wakes up.
