“I thought maybe two or three years, and then politicians will find some kind of consensus,” said a Ukrainian soldier who, for security reasons, gave only his call sign, France, a nod to his time in the French Foreign Legion.

A nod is a quick, downward and upward movement of the head. It is a universal non-verbal gesture primarily used to signal agreement, approval, or understanding, and to silently greet someone. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The gesture carries a few distinct meanings and applications:
1. Common Uses

  • Greeting and Acknowledgment: A quick, single nod is often used to silently say "hello", recognize someone's presence, or show that you see them across a room.
  • Approval: Nodding along while someone is speaking to show that you are listening and approve of what they are saying.
  • Instruction: Nodding in a specific direction or towards a door can serve as a silent cue for someone to enter or follow.
2. Physical & Involuntary Meanings
  • Drowsiness: The term also describes the involuntary falling forward of the head when a person is fighting sleep or dozing off (e.g., "nodding off").
  • Swaying: In nature, it can refer to flowers or tree branches swaying gently. [1, 2, 3]
3. Common Phrases & Idioms
  • "Give/Get the nod": To receive official approval, permission, or a positive vote for something (e.g., receiving an award nomination or being selected for a team).
  • "A nod to": Making a subtle reference to, or acknowledging the influence of, a past event, person, or style.「

In 1896, the 30-year-old Wassily Kandinsky attended a performance of Richard Wagner’s opera “Lohengrin” at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

“In spirit I saw all my colors — they stood in front of my mind’s eye. Wild, almost mad lines, appeared before me,” the future artist said of that first encounter with Wagner’s romantic opera. “It became quite clear to me,” he continued, “painting could develop the same powers that music possessed.” That same year, he moved from his native Russia to Munich, determined to study painting.
