The story behind the mythical figure of “the Wandering Jew” is one of the most fascinating tales in European history. In I, Wandering Jew, National Jewish Book Award–winning historian Yair Mintzker traces the tale back to its source, follows its many metamorphoses through five centuries, and relates it to the fraught present moment.

The Wandering Jew is a medieval European myth about a Jewish man who taunted Jesus on the way to the crucifixion and was subsequently cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. Often named Ahasuerus or John Buttadeus, he is a figure of eternal wandering and repentance, symbolizing, in antisemitic tradition, Jewish exile and, in other iterations, the burden of sin.
Key Aspects of the Legend:
- Origin: The story gained popularity in the 13th century, with accounts of a man who told Jesus, "Go faster, Jesus! Why do you tarry?" to which Jesus replied, "I go, but thou shalt wait till I return".
- Variations: Some versions name the man Ahasuerus, a shoemaker who refused to let Jesus rest at his doorstep. Another version (1228) describes him as Pontius Pilate’s doorkeeper.
- Symbolism: The figure became a powerful myth in Western literature and art, often used to symbolize the diaspora and, unfortunately, to promote antisemitic ideas of the "eternal Jew" who belongs nowhere.
- Cultural Representation: Famously depicted in 19th-century engravings by Gustave Doré.
Common Characteristics:
- Immortality & Wandering: He is condemned to travel constantly, never able to stay in one place or die.
- Appearance: Often portrayed as an old, tired man carrying the guilt of his actions, occasionally described as a beggar.
- Theological Purpose: In medieval Christian thought, he served as a symbol of the "Old" world witnessing the "New" faith.
Other Associations:
- The name is also used for a plant species (Tradescantia zebrina), which is sometimes renamed "Wandering Dude" due to the anti-semitic origins of the original phrase.
