As night fell, Mehrnam Rastegari began to jump over a row of small bonfires, hand in hand with a friend. It was a centuries-old ritual of purification and renewal in celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year.
“Tonight allows me to reconnect with what we used to do back in Iran,” said Ms. Rastegari, 34, who is originally from the city of Isfahan.
She had come from Brooklyn to Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey, arriving just before sunset on Tuesday. The gathering, organized by a group called Khooneh, brought together a large crowd of Iranians for the tradition of Chaharshanbe Suri, an ancient Persian fire festival.
