Made in 1889, this etching shows artist Berthe Morisot sitting and sketching, while her daughter Julie Manet watches. The French artist died #onthisday in 1895.

Morisot was part of the influential French Impressionist movement, capturing the vibrant world around her in vivid prints, drawings and paintings. She was a contemporary of Cézanne, Cassatt, Degas and Monet, exhibiting in Parisian shows during the second half of the 19th century.

Dual-artist blockbusters, like 2023’s “Manet/Degas” at the Metropolitan Museum, typically unfold as head-to-head competitions. The intimate and enthralling exhibition “Manet & Morisot,” at the Legion of Honor, is something else: a mind-meld, merging the spirits and sensibilities of Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot, two influential artists who are considered painter’s painters. The show’s catalog even invokes the portmanteau “Marisot” (coined by the French philosopher Fabienne Brugère), as if these two 19th-century artists were a modern-day celebrity couple — and on an artistic level, it fits.像2023年在大都會藝術博物館舉辦的「馬奈/德加」這樣的雙人鉅作展，通常以兩位藝術家正面交鋒的形式呈現。而法國榮譽軍團博物館舉辦的這場名為「馬奈與莫里索」的私密而引人入勝的展覽則截然不同：它是一場心靈的融合，將愛德華·馬奈和貝爾特·莫里索這兩位被譽為「畫家中的畫家」的極具影響力的藝術家的精神和感性融為一體。展覽目錄甚至引用了合成詞「Marisot」（由法國哲學家法比安娜·布魯熱創作），彷彿這兩位 19 世紀的藝術家是一對現代名人夫婦——從藝術層面來說，這很貼切。
