Autumn Moon at Ishiyama
by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)
Eight Views of Omi Province - In Japan, the scenic "Eight Views of Omi" was a popular subject for woodblock print artists, featuring specific landscapes and weather conditions in Omi Province. Hiroshige did many series of this classic subject, returning to it again and again. While most of his Omi views are horizontal format, this 1857 series takes an unusual vertical orientation, with the landscape below and a border of
clouds decorated with scattered confetti-like shapes across the top. These attractive panoramic views feature fine detail and soft bokashi shading. A rarely seen series. This print is from an 1891 Memorial Edition of the 1857 series.
Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)
Utagawa Hiroshige Eight Shadow Figures, by Utagawa Hiroshige, ca. 1842. ⠀
⠀
From the “New Edition of Shadow Making” series, probably considered omocha-e (toy pictures) intended for children. The eight patterns presented here (clockwise from upper right) are a turtle on a rock, a man wearing a Chinese-style hat, a rabbit, a shachihoko (a legendary creature with the head of dragon and the body of a dolphin), an owl, a fox, a snail, and a crow. Three include written instructions on how to make
the shadows move: “open your fingers within your sleeve to move the owl’s wings,” “draw up your knee for the fox’s back,” “move the chopsticks up and down [snail].”⠀
