In 2013, George Clooney famously gifted 14 of his closest friends $1 million each in cash, totaling $14 million
, to thank them for their support during his early, struggling acting career. He surprised them at a dinner with suitcases filled with $20 bills and also covered the taxes.
Key Details of the Gesture:
  • The Motivation: Clooney wanted to repay friends who had allowed him to sleep on their couches, loaned him money, and supported him before he became successful.
  • The Method: In September 2013, he invited "The Boys" (his group of friends) to his home and presented each with a Tumi suitcase containing $1 million in cash.
  • Tax Coverage: Rande Gerber, a close friend and husband of Cindy Crawford, noted that Clooney also paid the taxes for that year, ensuring they received the full amount.
  • Beneficiaries: The recipients included friends from various backgrounds, some of whom were struggling financially at the time.
  • Context: The generous act occurred before Clooney married Amal, which Gerber jokingly referred to as "good karma".

France has granted citizenship to George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, according to government decrees issued over the weekend. The Hollywood star has praised French culture and said that the country's privacy laws enabled him and his family to pursue a quieter existence.

"Over the last week photographers from Voici magazine scaled our fence, climbed our tree and illegally took pictures of our infants inside our home. Make no mistake the photographers, the agency and the magazine will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The safety of our children demands it."
