“It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
I was so preposterously serious in those days, such a humorless little prig.
Lightly, lightly – it’s the best advice ever given me.
When it comes to dying even. Nothing ponderous, or portentous, or emphatic.
No rhetoric, no tremolos,
no self conscious persona putting on its celebrated imitation of Christ or Little Nell.
And of course, no theology, no metaphysics.
Just the fact of dying and the fact of the clear light.
So throw away your baggage and go forward.
There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,
trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair.
That’s why you must walk so lightly.
Lightly my darling,
on tiptoes and no luggage,
not even a sponge bag,
completely unencumbered.”
― Island「

AI Overview
"Imitation of Christ" refers to The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis, a classic Christian devotional book offering spiritual guidance for achieving perfection by following Christ's divine example. The term "Little Nell" is likely a colloquial reference to Little Nell from Charles Dickens's novel The Old Curiosity Shop, who embodies innocence and virtue, contrasting with the profound spiritual wisdom of The Imitation of Christ.
The Imitation of Christ
- Author: Written by Thomas à Kempis.
- Purpose: To guide the reader in Christian perfection by living a life that emulates Christ, acting as a handbook for the spiritual life.
- Origin: Stemmed from the Devotio Moderna movement in the early 15th century.
- Significance: It is one of the most widely read Christian devotional works after the Bible and a revered classic of religious literature.
"Little Nell"
- A character named Nell Trent in Charles Dickens's novel The Old Curiosity Shop.
- Little Nell is depicted as an embodiment of innocence, kindness, and moral purity.
- Her character is often used to symbolize ideal goodness and virtue, particularly in contrast to the harsh realities of the world around her.
Contrast and Connection
While The Imitation of Christ provides a structured approach to spiritual devotion and the philosophical pursuit of virtue, the reference to "Little Nell" serves as a literary shorthand for embodying moral goodness and innocence. The pairing of these two suggests a contrast between a profound, philosophical path to spiritual perfection and an inherent, childlike purity of spirit.
