China's "anaconda strategy,"

For The Economist's World Ahead 2026, the China-Taiwan dynamic centers on escalating pressure via China's "anaconda strategy," intensifying economic coercion and military gray-zone tactics, while Taiwan focuses on deepening U.S. defense ties, enhancing self-defense (especially in semiconductors), and leveraging its crucial chip role, all under increasing geopolitical uncertainty and potential shifts in global alliances influenced by U.S. politics. Expect more assertive Chinese actions, testing Taiwan's resilience and international support, while Taiwan boosts military readiness and economic insulation, knowing its chip dominance is a key asset.
China's Approach (Squeezing & Probing)
  • Intensified "Anaconda Strategy": Expect greater economic blockades (squeezing), expanded military drills, and more frequent incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone).
  • Geopolitical Maneuvering: China aims to exploit potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy (e.g., Trump's impact) to isolate Taiwan and test international resolve.
  • Infrastructural Insurance: China develops alternative trade routes (like Myanmar pipelines) to hedge against potential disruptions from a Taiwan conflict.
Taiwan's Approach (Resilience & Deepening Ties)
  • Semiconductor Leverage: Taiwan leverages its indispensable role in advanced chips (TSMC) for economic security and deeper U.S. partnerships, boosting deterrence.
  • Military Strengthening: Focus on asymmetric warfare, building resilience to withstand prolonged pressure, and training with allies like the U.S..
  • Strategic Ambiguity: Continues to balance defense with avoiding outright provocation, relying on U.S. support without guaranteeing direct intervention.
Key Tensions for 2026
  • Economic Warfare: China's squeeze tactics will test Taiwan's ability to maintain economic stability amid growing political risks.
  • Gray Zone Escalation: China's "inbuilt tendency to overreach" could manifest in risky military moves, risking wider conflict.
  • Shifting Global Norms: China may capitalize on a less predictable U.S. stance to advance its territorial ambitions, making Taiwan's strategic position more precarious.
In essence, The Economist highlights a high-stakes year where China tests Taiwan's defenses and resolve through coordinated pressure, while Taiwan relies on its tech sector and strengthened U.S. alignment for survival, all under a cloud of increasing global geopolitical uncertainty.
