The classic joke goes like this:
Shortly after Ludwig van Beethoven passed away, townsfolk walking near his cemetery began hearing strange, muffled noises coming from the grave. The town drunk, terrified, fetched the local priest, who heard unrecognizable, faint music. [

They escalated it to the town magistrate. Baffled, the magistrate bent his ear to the ground and realized that Beethoven's symphonies were playing backward. He listened as the Ninth, Eighth, Seventh, and Sixth played in reverse. Suddenly, the truth dawned on him. He stood up and announced to the gathered crowd:
"My fellow citizens, there's nothing to worry about. It's just Beethoven decomposing." [

但願每個夜晚，我們都有個能聽見內心聲音的睡前小故事。
這是推主學生時代遇見的老師。

國中時，我有一位音樂老師，怎麼看都不像一般老師。
他是男老師。可是走路的姿態很柔和，聲音稍微偏高，會一邊揮動著手，一邊走進音樂教室說：「好啦，各位，今天心裡的調音沒有跑掉吧？」
也就是所謂帶有一點姊姊感的老師。
如果男生揮舞直笛，他就會罵：
「喂，男生們！那不是武器！」
教室裡便會笑成一片。可是，只要那位老師坐到鋼琴前，空氣就會瞬間改變。
第一個音響起的瞬間，連剛才吵鬧的學生都會安靜下來。老師教古典音樂時，從不把它當成單純的老音樂來教。
「古典音樂啊，不只是睡覺時拿來聽的音樂。那是以前的人戀愛、失戀、憤怒、哭泣，卻仍然活下去的證明。」
他這麼說著，彈起了貝多芬。
「即使耳朵聽不見，他仍然向世界奏出音樂。」
在那之後聽到的《命運》，就不再只是「噹噹噹噹」而已。它聽起來像是人生粗暴地敲打著門的聲音。
莫札特也不只是開朗的天才。
「他看起來可愛，其實也滿有毒的。會在明亮的曲子背後，悄悄藏進一點寂寞。班上也有這種孩子吧？」
被他這麼一說，遙遠過去的作曲家，突然像是同一間教室裡的某個人。
講到蕭邦時，老師稍微沉默了一下，才說：
「這個人的曲子裡，有一種想回到某個地方，卻回不去的感覺。」
夜曲像是傍晚的窗。社團活動結束後的操場、空無一人的走廊、莫名想哭的回家路。這一切，全都變成了聲音。
那時候，我第一次知道。
音樂不是音符的排列。
音樂是那些無法成為語言的心情，可以安放的地方。
合唱比賽時，老師也非常認真。
「以為只要大聲唱就好的孩子，不對喔。唱歌不是吶喊。唱歌是把一封信交給某個人。」
他對男生說：
「你們的聲音是地面。如果女生的聲音是在天空飛翔，那男生就是支撐一切的地基。」
他對女生說：
「不要太想把歌唱得漂亮。只有漂亮的聲音很無聊。要稍微混進一點真心。」
他這麼說。
於是，合唱不再只是把音準對齊而已。害羞、不滿、感情好、說不出口的心情，全都混在一起，變成了一道聲音。
老師常常一個人在音樂教室聽黑膠唱片。
「心這種東西啊，如果放著不管，很快就會變得像抹布一樣。」
長大之後，我才又想起這句話。工作累了一天，在什麼都說不出口的夜晚，我忽然放起蕭邦。於是，白色窗簾、夕陽斜照下的鋼琴、老師的聲音，都回來了。
「心裡的調音，沒有跑掉吧？」
那位老師教的並不是音樂。
他教的是替情感取名字的方法。
如果說數學老師是教人怎麼拿分數的人，那位音樂老師，就是教我們分數無法衡量之物有多重要的人。
不是為了變得堅不可摧。
也不是為了變強。
而是為了能以柔軟的樣子活下去。
那間音樂教室裡發生的，並不只是普通的課程。
那是一場小小的演奏會。
讓吵鬧、笨拙、容易受傷的國中生們，學著傾聽自己的心。
現在回想起來，我的學生時代真的很幸運，遇到了很好的老師。那些人都是天才。
