We are delighted to announce Calder: Chess Knightmares, a landmark publication by Cahiers d’Art on Calder, Duchamp, and chess. This richly illustrated book features texts by Alexander S. C. Rower, Susan Braeuer Dam, and Jed Perl, as well as the reproduction of forty-six chess drawings made by Calder in 1944, with alternate titles by Duchamp.

“They unleash an otherwise regulated game into frenzied conflicts of immorality, with executions and sexual mishaps,” writes Alexander S. C. Rower. “Bawdy female Knights, conspiring Bishops, and misbehaving Queens engage clueless Rooks, lewd Pawns, and mating Kings. Strategy plays second fiddle to the blasphemous undercurrent.” Calder submitted these drawings for publication twice in his lifetime, and both times they were rejected.
