Iran has had big waves of protest before. “But the current unrest, which began on December 28th, sparked by anger at inflation and currency collapse, is bigger, broader and more serious,” writes our defence editor in The War Room newsletter

The Lascaris War Rooms - Maltatina
A "war room" originated from military strategy rooms, famously used by Winston Churchill in WWII for high-level decision-making during crises, and evolved from earlier concepts dating back to the late 19th century with figures like President McKinley and Lincoln, becoming a metaphor for intense, collaborative spaces for critical problem-solving in business, tech, and politics today, featuring real-time info and collaborative tools.
Historical Roots
  • Early Use (Late 19th/Early 20th Century): The concept of a dedicated space for wartime planning existed before WWII, with examples at the White House for President McKinley (Spanish-American War) and discussions around Lincoln's wartime operations.
  • Winston Churchill (WWII): The most iconic example is Churchill's underground bunker, a fully equipped command center for military leaders and strategists to coordinate during the war, solidifying the term's prominence.
Evolution into Modern Usage
  • Military: Evolved from static maps to dynamic, real-time command centers with advanced communications.
  • Business & Tech: Adopted for project management, product launches, or crisis response, becoming a collaborative hub for focused, intensive work, often called "tiger teams" or "sprint rooms".
  • Politics: Used for campaign strategy, as seen in the documentary The War Room about the 1992 Clinton campaign.
Key Characteristics
  • Dedicated Space: A physical (or virtual) room for focused work, free from distractions.
  • Collaborative: Everyone participates in brainstorming and decision-making, not just receiving information.
  • Information-Rich: Equipped with all necessary data, maps, and communication tools for quick analysis.
  • Crisis-Driven: Ideal for urgent situations requiring rapid, strategic decisions.
