Did you know that IKEA was founded by a young entrepreneur at the age of 17?The story of IKEA begins in 1943 in Sweden when a teenager named Ingvar Kamprad started the company. Kamprad, who was only 17 years old, began his business selling small products like pens
and photo frames
from his home. The name IKEA comes from the initials of his name (Ingvar Kamprad), the farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd), and his hometown (Agunnaryd).
At first, IKEA didn’t sell furniture. The company focused on simple, small everyday items, standing out for its affordable prices
. But as the company grew, Kamprad realized the furniture market could offer great opportunities. In 1948, the company began selling furniture, but the real transformation came in the 1950s.
In 1956, IKEA introduced the innovative concept of flat-pack furniture
. This idea helped reduce transportation and storage costs, allowing the company to sell furniture at even lower prices
.In 1958, IKEA opened its first store in Älmhult, Sweden, which became a massive success. This store was the first of many that would follow around the world
. What made IKEA unique was that customers could see, touch, and try the furniture in the store
, but then they would take it home in flat boxes
, which reduced costs even further. In the 1960s and 70s, IKEA began expanding outside of Sweden, first to Norway
and then to other countries in Europe
. During the 1980s and 90s, the company went global, opening stores in places like the United States
and Asia
.Today, IKEA has more than 400 stores in over 50 countries
and is known for offering a wide variety of modern furniture that is affordable for everyone
. Kamprad’s philosophy of providing functional, high-quality products at low prices remains unchanged
.---IKEA, from its humble beginnings in a Swedish farm to becoming a global giant, is a testament to how an innovative idea and clear vision can change the way people live and connect with their homes
