2024 economic sciences laureate Daron Acemoglu grew up immersed in diversity. As an Armenian in Turkey, he attended both an Armenian school and a regular school during his childhood, forming friendships across Armenian, Jewish, Greek, and broader Turkish communities.
He believes that collectivity and diversity are essential in every field of scientific inquiry or knowledge building. The most meaningful progress happens when people learn from one another and build on the shoulders of giants. Collaboration is what allows humanity to thrive, and diversity is crucial for the incremental development of collective knowledge.
"It requires different genders, ethnicities, religions, all groups in terms of their histories and experiences bring different things to the table, different questions, different approaches, and I think we can try to make best use of it in this collective knowledge way."

The vendor frowned but filled the order. Blushing, I handed the bag and cups to the man. "Here," I muttered.
As I walked away, his raspy voice stopped me. "Wait." He held out a crumpled paper. "Read it at home," he said with a strange smile.
I stuffed the note into my pocket, dismissing it as I focused on my commute, work emails, and the hundred other trivialities of modern life.
It wasn't until the next evening, as I cleaned out my coat pocket, that I found it. The paper was creased and worn, but the message was clear.
